Anne of Cleves

I have written a few articles on Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII’s fourth wife and the one known unfairly as “The Flanders Mare”:-

Here is a video about her from Historic Royal Palaces:-

  1. Wow, this guy probably would have been in love with Anne himself had he existed in the 1540s!

I love the description by Karen Lindsey of Anne and Henry’s marriage:

If the stories of Henry’s first two marriages, are high tragedy, with Henry as the destroyer of two strong but ultimately helpless women, that of his fourth is broad comedy; the narcisisstic buffoon foiled by a woman with common sense.

  2. Hey miladyblue,

Lol! Yeah, he he lived then, he would have pursued her!

From everything I have read, Anne’s portrait was accurate and her contemporaries describe her as a kind, sweet woman.

Eventually, she was able to become good friends with Henry, proving she was a bright woman, a survivor.

A combination of factors seemed to have led to the separation, but it is interesting to think that, had Anne of Cleves remained Henry’s wife, he might have had several smooth and happy last years.

  3. Did King Henry VIII have an affair with Anne while married to Queen Catherine Howard and is this why Catherine was jealous of Anne?

    1. It’s not my video, Claudia, it’s one produced by Historic Royal Palaces who own the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace, I was just sharing it.
