This is slightly off the topic, but it does involve Mary. As we all know Henry re-instated by an act of Parliament that both Mary and Elizabeth would rule if Edward died without Male issue. When Eddy was dying Northumberland persuaded him to disinherit both Mary and Elizabeth and name Jane Grey as his heir instead.. Was that order verified by Parliament? Mary as we know issued an act of Parliament in 1554? overturning the great divorce etc and going to a lot of trouble too of getting herself as the only legitimate heir to H8 crown, and thus bastardizing Elizabeth again. Did Mary actually name Elizabeth as her heir when she knew she was dying?
I find it strange that although Mary overturned the great divorce etc. she didn’t appear to overturn H8 1544 Act of Parliament. Or did she?
However it was the 1544 act that gave Elizabeth the right to the throne, despite Mary QOS and Philip of Spain’s claims to the contrary.Boleyn,
No, the order was not verified by Parliament. Northumberland was going to have Parliament give it the okay when next they met, which I think was to be in September. Edward died in July. Mary did not overturn the 1544 Act of Parliament. I don’t think Mary actually named Elizabeth as her successor. She followed her Father’s desires. Directly after Mary’s death, the coronation ring was taken to Elizabeth.Thank you Sharon…
Mary was a really complex charater, the more I read about her, the more I just don’t get her. She seemed to have a love/hate relationship with Elizabeth. Again this is another part of Mary I don’t get.. Lady Jane Grey was a threat for sure, but Elizabeth was the greater threat as she was next in line per the 1544 act. Why execute Jane? Yes I know Renard tried all he could to get Mary to execute Elizabeth, but he later changed his mind.
Why? Did Philip love Mary? How did Philip feel towards Elizabeth?Personally, I don’t think Philip loved either Mary or Elizabeth. he played the loving consort to Mary, partly because his father Charles, Mary’s cousin Carlos, wanted the alliance with England and partly to further his own desires of French conquests.
IMO, Elizabeth was seen by the Spanish as the default heir due to her supposed illegitimacy and the various acts of Parliment enshrined during H8’s reign. I am of the opinion that several Spanish ambassadors thought she was as easy a touch as Mary was and would fall in line with the pre-eminant power of the era simply because they had no concept of Elizabeth’s education and real feelings because she was an expert at hiding her essential self.
Totally agree Anyanka.. I do believe Philip saw Elizabeth, as some sort of dumbo, after all this was in an age where woman were woman were seen as commodities, not as equals etc. I believe Elizabeth did play the subserviant roll during Mary’s lifetime basically so she could keep her head.
Yes I believe Philip neither loved or cared either for Mary or Elizabeth, to him they were just the holder of the bank balance, and if he had to marry them to get his hands on that money then so be it. When Elizabeth came to the throne he knew that she would play hard to get and he was prepared for that, but equally so he underestimated Elizabeth, and she soon showed him who was boss.

I know this sounds a bit sellout, but i love the film Elizabeth with ‘our cate’ in it. I know that some of it is romanticised, i know perhaps she didnt have a love affair with Dudley etc, but i think Cate Blanchett captures Elizabeth so beautifully, and i prefer to think of her like that, than the Elizabeth from Black Adder lol Although i really do love Black Adder. My fave ep is the one with “Bob”. I think you were very right about Phillip tho, he basically expected to jump from Mary’s bed into Lizzies, thinking he would just get passed along like the crown jewels, i think he must have had a little bit of amnesia regarding elizabeths origins! I also think he might have been a bit of a wanker, although i dont think i would have wanted to be a friend of Mary’s, she burned people at the stake akin to the likes of Hitler! On a lighter note, i think she’d throw a great barbie! (Barbeque, im aussie…)

Tash, I loved both of the Cate movies. Yes, they were romanticized, but I think they kept her character true. That’s the impression I have, anyway. Elizabeth had a real flair for opulent ‘dressing to impress’ and the movies certainly got that across.
Phillip was really nothing more than a heretic-burning-money-grabbing gigolo. He would have never stood a chance with Elizabeth. She was much more of a ‘man’ than he was.
On the other hand, I finally watched Anonymous. I don’t even know where to begin.

Cate was good, and so was Anne Marie Duff, but there is really only one person that can truly be worthy of the title of playing Elizabeth with any sort of conviction or realism and that is Glenda Jackson.. She was Elizabeth to me, she just seemed to me at least to capture what I feel to be what Elizabeth was like.. A firey passionate woman with the heart and stomach of a lion, whose courage and determination saved England from a fate worse than death..

Being new to this site, I’ll probably post where I’m not supposed to, so please bear with me. I’m enjoying reading the posts here and am learning a great deal about the Boleyn Family. I recently viewed the video on YouTube; BBC Production of the Phillippa Gregory novel “The Other Boleyn Girl”; in which they presented the possibility that George and Anne had a sexual incounter in order to possibly give Anne the chance to produce a “male” heir. This is the first time I’ve learned about that theory. I just read a post here which talks about the possibility that George may have been “gay”. That too was a new surprise for me.
From limited research, I believe my family has direct connections with that of the Boleyns, which gives me greater incentive to continue reading and researching into this possibility. Once again, I’m so glad I have found this site. I’m 70 years old, so I don’t have much time left to do research, so, I’ve GOT TO GET CRACKING!!

Firstly Welcome to our family home Barnettbuff, we are a mixed bunch of scallywags who enjoy lively debate and sharing our joys and woes..
You will learn an awful lot being here, and many people’s opinions about what went on in times gone by.
I will warn you however that some of my theories and ideas are sometimes a little off the latch, but everyone here is used to them now, but for a new member they can seem quite shocking.
Phillipa Gregory is ok to read if you need to have a good laugh, but for the most part her books are really just diatribe. Although having said that the Red and the White Queens books I quite enjoyed, and they certainly do seem to put forward a few ideas about what may have happened concerning the death of the little Princes in the Tower.
Anyway I look forward to reading your posts.
