Hi everyone! I was just curious about other biographies of Anne Boleyn that you found enjoyable, aside from the wonderful and iconic Anne Boleyn ‘bible’ by Eric Ives. In particuar, have any of you read Elizabeth Norton’s biography of her (the biography not the sourcebook) or Lacey Baldwin Smith’s? If so would you recommend them?
Also, on a side note, I know that Alison Weir’s works can be controversial, so I was just wondering if any of you would recommend her biography of Elizabeth I? Thank you so much

Hi Kylie. I actually have just bought Elizabeth’s biography of Anne, I am planning on starting both that and the Letters/Source book this week, but I can recommend her books in general. I’ve got Josephine Wilkinson’s biography of Anne and her edit of the Paul Freidmann biography, which is older but it seems very popular. So while I haven’t read these yet I would still recommend them.
Lacey Baldwin Smith’s doesn’t seem to have been very popular around here from what I recall. I would definitely recommend is Starkey’s Six Wives, which has a good section on each wife. I did not enjoy Warnicke or Joanna Denny’s.
I really like Weir’s last two books, but not the earlier ones. I am not sure about her Elizabeth book, someone here should have read it though.

Denny and Weir are both rather problematic.
Denny is incredibly biased, in a very anti-Catholic way, which is wildly inappropriate, but also pretty gross. I’ve also found her arguments, and the evidence she uses, pretty wobbly in terms of reliability, but she is by no means the worst at that. That crown goes to Weir.
Weir, I only ever recommend as a starting point in research, because her arguments are rarely sufficiently supported and she often neglects to credit evidence for her claims. Sometimes she does, but it’s a very unclear creditation and therefore is hardly useful. If you’re just getting into researching Anne, then Weir is fine, but she’s rather unreliable if you’re looking for in-depth and supported theories and evaluation.
