Hi,
I’m a PhD student at London South Bank University writing a doctorate entitled ‘Fan Boleyn: Anne Boleyn in subculture’, on the interest, following and fandom surrounding Anne Boleyn. The study will focus in part on online communities and websites with a particular focus on The Anne Boleyn Files, as it is the foremost online resource for all things Boleyn. I’m also comparing and contrasting with the following around Mary Queen of Scots and discussing which of these two tragic queens is the most ‘popular’, and why. This is research not so much about Anne as about the people who are drawn to her; in other words, YOU.
I am looking for possible participants to assist me in my research, and am inviting users of this forum participate in my research project. If you are interested in taking part then all you have to do is click the Survey Monkey link below and fill in the questionnaire. It’s all completely anonymous, no email required. Please note the survey will take a good hour or two to complete properly but you can save and return to it any time you like.

If you wish for clarification of my credentials you’re welcome to contact either of my supervisors:

Thanks for your time,
Mickey

Firstly may I wish you every success in your doctorate. I’ve always wanted to do a degree in History myself but like so many of us now it’s having the money to do it.
Anne Boleyn: She’s my heroine. A woman of incredible strength, courage, wisdom, wit and intelligence. Basically she took on the most powerful monarch in the known world and won. Ok so she was blamed for the fall of the Roman empire (loosely worded, and pardon the pun), but she did nothing of the sort. Henry was the one who went crazy for her and destroyed England and the Catholic faith in England, that was entirely his actions not hers. She also gave us the great Elizabeth, it’s just a shame that Anne wasn’t there to see her daughter crowned.
Anne’s influence and what she brought to England is still very much with us today. When she came back to England from France and came to court, she instantly stood out in the crowd, basically because she refused to run with the herd. She was her own person not just an extention of someone. Woman back then were told what to do and what to say etc and really a woman’s role was just to have babies and keep their traps shut. Anne on the other hand said “If I have something to say I will say it and if you don’t like it tough” She also showed woman that they were just as important as men, and were their equals in all things. That must have been apsolutely shocking back then to the men in the court to have woman tell them what to do. I suppose you could say that Anne was a role model for the modern age. It was her determination in making sure that woman had just as much right to education etc and because of it she helped shape the world woman have today.
Anne was a remarkable woman, when Henry wanted shot of her her main thought was of her daughter, she knew that she had to survive, and so sacrificed her own life to save Elizabeth and make sure that in time she would rule the world. What Anne started in England for woman’s rights Elizabeth finished.
Henry called Anne a witch, well maybe she was because she has held the world spellbound for over 500 years with what she has acheived for woman.

thanks so much Claire – I ought to mention however for any potential participants that it may take more than a few minutes. The survey is a rather lengthy look at the possible reasons for the subculture surrounding Anne, but people can save their work and return to it at a later date. I’d estimate overall it might take a couple of hours to complete

Ha! Yes, I started it about 20 mins before I was due to head out of the door to pick up my son from school – ooops, was nearly late! It only took me around 20 mins to do but perhaps I wasn’t detailed enough in my answers – sorry, let me know if you need more.

thanks to everyone who replied and completed the survey – just giving this thread a little ‘bump’ in case there are others who haven’t yet seen it. The survey will be open for another month or so and then i’ll close it and start collating all the information.
Is it closed yet or do I still have time to fill it?

hi everyone,
the survey is now closed and I am in the process of putting together all the data, so a big thanks to everyone who responded. I am also in the middle of transferring from MPhil to PhD so it’s all go. I will let you all know how I got on in due course, whether its true that Anne Boleyn has such a following – as typified by the Anne Boleyn Files – that she can actually be considered a subculture, and if so, what it says about the people who use this forum!

The best of luck with your project Mickey. I look forward to hearing all about it.
I wouldnt really say that being a fan of Anne is the right word, for us.. I would say we were her champions and protectors of her all that she was. We all know of her wit and her learning, and in a way her wit (Perhaps her wit shows more so with me) and her learning shines out like a beacon from our discussions.
Her learning especially made an impact on history she basically changed the whole of England with it. She was an amazing woman put simply..
It’s funny though I asked myself this question a few times.. We all know that Elizabeth’s reign turned out of to far better than her father’s reign, she actually acheived things whereas Henry Turnip strutted about or ponched around French playing the big I am, when he wasn’t chopping people up that is. Elizabeth held together a nation which was very disjointed and dysfuntional and had been really in my opinion since after J.H’s murder, but not only had she held it together she healed it to a great degree as well.
Would she have been as good as she was if her mother was still alive when she succeeded to throne?
