A few months back I typed “Anne Boleyn” into the iTunes Store search box and found a 2 part series on Anne Boleyn on a podcast called The Spirit Revolution. Woo-boy did I stumble across some crazy! The podcast was actually extremely interesting in places and offered a fresh perspective on Anne, but for the most part the hosts, Kathleen McGowan and Philip Coppens, just bash Eric Ives and other historians, claiming that they've ignored a huge body of primary materials from the Continent. They imply over and over that they have the real truth and they are going to prove it, but they never get around to proving it.
And what is it they're trying to prove? That Anne Boleyn was a devotee of Mary Magdalene, and that she had been groomed by the female rulers of Europe to become Queen of England and initiate a religious reform based on gnosticism! They claim Margaret of Austria ran a school for sibyls (female prophetesses) and Anne Boleyn was her star pupil. It all sounds very DaVinci Code to me, and in fact, McGowan and Coppens have a website, AnneBoleyn.com, with an article called The Holbein Code, which alleges to find all sorts of gnostic references in Holbein's work.
It isn't the crazy premise that bothers me though. It's the fact that they keep bashing Ives and other Tudor historians, implying that their research is the only research that matters. They even take a few shots at this very website, though not by name, claiming it is full of “crass, tasteless advertising.” I for one do not find anything about this site crass or tasteless, and am somewhat vicariously offended. This is a community dedicated to discovering the truth about Anne, not perpetuating yet another version of her to fit with some (in this case, whacked out crazy) preconceived notion of her.
So check out the podcast or AnneBoleyn.com if you want a fresh perspective on Anne. Or a laugh.

Melissa,
I've never heard about this or come across their website anywhere, but I am intrigued and shall check it out. There are some crazy theories out there about most things, but I've never read anything about the claims these two make. It is amazing how people who claim they know or own the Truth never actual get around to saying what it is. I guess it's easier to be a talking head then to conduct thorough research, documented and cited.
I take offence, like you, to anything negativley said about The Anne Boleyn Files. This is a great website, run by an amazing woman, whose hard work does Anne Boleyn fans proud. I would never describe this website as crass or tastless. The only crass or tasteless thing are people like McGowan and Coppens, who like to bash respected and astute historians for their own pleasure and self-gain.

Melissa,
I went to the site and read what they had to say. It sounded so much like the Da Vinci Code, it cracked me up. “The Holbien Code”…Book must be in the works. If I remember right the place they spoke of in France was woven into Browne's story. I can't remember if it was in the Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons. I loved these books but they were fiction. Browne was very explicit about that.
The way they referred to this website was insulting. The time and energy Claire puts into the ABFiles comes from her pure devotion to telling the truth about Anne and the times in which she lived. How sad that in order to promote their theory, they feel the need to insult Claire.
I can't believe they take on Ives with such a cheap shot….Still ROTFL!

Oh yeah this site! I visit it every so often just for a good laugh
I made the mistake of reading Kathleen McGowans' book on Mary Magdalene. A complete Da Vinci Code rip off and completely and utterly awful and just made worse by the fact that the author actually believes these crack-pot theories. Unlike Dan Brown, as Sharon said, who never presented his books as anything other than fiction. And now she's carrying on the madness and dragging Anne Boleyn into it…. Total fruit-loop.
And to insult Claire and all her hard work she puts into this site and all it's intelligent, well-informed members and visitors is just beyond the pale IMO. And to slag off respected historians just to promote their own whacked-out agenda makes me mad too. As for their supposed book on Anne, I shall avoid it like the plague.

In which part of the article do they insult The AB files? …..
On the website Anne Boleyn.com. On their homepage they take a dig at other sites on Anne and how they're junked up by advertising and tatty products, though they're careful not to name this site specifically. And they're not trying to sell their crappy book and theories?!

*shakes head in disbelief* I must admit I couldn't bring myself to finish reading the Holbein article a) because the writing is quite heavy going and b) because I got impatient with them obviously not realising that in the sixteenth century spelling wasn't standardised. (I refer them to the number of different ways Shakespeare spelt his own surname.)
The scary thing is that I do agree with their view that Bernard doesn't always sufficiently back up his arguments. *starts humming Queen song I'm Going Slightly Mad*…

If these people want to espouse a different Anne theory, that's fine. But don't take pot-shots at other people who don't share your ideas. There are several historians who disagree on various aspects of Anne, but no one else tries to act like there's some big conspiracy out there to conceal the so-called “truth”. Or to pretend that their research is more valid than someone else's.
I wonder what Starkey, Ives, and all the rest think of these two crackpots.

Okay now i see where they basically slam this site. Of course they don't actually name the site. I think the jewlery and all the products on this site are fun, creative and honestly when i put my necklaces on i feel somehow closer to Anne. This is one of the only sites i've seen that actually defends Anne and trys to put as much truth out possible.
I'm sorry to be cruel but i hope their site bombs.
Keep up the good work Claire, this site is amazing.

Oh I would love to hear Starkey's views
I think Bernard references this site on p194 although he doesn't attribute the quote.

I just bought some more, so take that, crazy site! Keep up the good work, Claire. You've developed a real feeling that we're a little community here.

I have come across this before, on the 'Anne Boleyn' facebook page. He was slamming other historians for ignoring sources and yet refused to name his own. Basically spent his entire time bagging Ives. Complete weirdo.
I'm reminded of a Terry Pratchett quote from Lords and Ladies which I'm paraphasing badly…
He got his information form self-evident sources, he made it up , and extrapolation from other valuable sources, which were also made up.
It's always bunnies.
