Hello, I was wondering if any of you have info on the miniature of Anne in the ring that Elizabeth I wore.
When was it pianted?
Who was the artist?
When did Elizabeth begin wearing it?
Anything about it would be greatly appreciated. Right now all I know about it is that the picture is of Anne, and that after Elizabeth died they had to cut it off because the skin had grown over the metal…

Lina,
The only information I could find on Elizabeth’s locket ring is that is was made circa 1575. Apparently the portrait of Elizabeth found in the ring dates to about this same time. I could not find a reference to who made the ring. I believe, but someone please correct me, that the ring was commissioned secretly, and it was not until Elizabeth’s death in 1603, that the true nature of the ring was discovered.
The portrait of Anne, while not labeled as her, does give us a good idea of what Anne may have looked like. The shape of the face, etcetera is similar to that of the Holbein painting found in the National Portait Gallery. While the person in the ring portrait does not wear a “B” necklace, there is no argument here that the person is Anne.
I found this ring to be a very sweet, and gives informatative insight into how Elizabeth felt about her mother. She was smart enough to know not to raise Anne’s name publically, but kept a secret memento to Anne.
The ring is kept at Chequers, the British Prime Ministers country residence, but a few years ago the ring was loaned to the a museum of Greenwich for an exhibition on Elizabeth.
I hope this has been of some help, but there are people on the forum who are better informed that me.
Best!

Just to add a little to DuchessofBrittany: Yes, that the picture is of Anne is undisputed as far as I know, and it gives us a good idea of what she looked like, though unfortunately it is quite damaged. I recently read about it in The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives, if this helps, which I recommend anyway because it’s hands down the best Anne Boleyn biography out there!
