Does anyone have any tips on independent publishing? I asked a friend who’s published but i’m pretty sure all he did was google it and send me the first link he found! I have never done it before, and am wondering if there are any legal matters I should consider, and if there are any particular publishers that I should consider or avoid…

Thanks Steve. Do you know of any good online independent publishers? What exactly is involved in independent publishing? I like the idea of sites that reformat from word doc to e book then place it in online book stores for you, but are they to be trusted? and if so which site is the best…or am I supposed to re format it myself then put it on sites myself, I write rather well but i know nothing about publishing…

Createspace is the one many authors use, Tash. Smashwords & Lulu are others (sites linked below). These are veteran corporate entities, and ‘mass market’ in scope, rather than truly independent companies which might possibly be amateurish (or not, of course). If you opt for different companies to these three, the list of publishers in the Absolute Write link will give you some guidance as to who’s trustworthy or not.

As for formatting, it’ll probably depend on what level of service you pay for. :)

Thank you Steve. My friend recommended Lulu too. Wish me luck, I’ve recently finished a book about the painting known as The Somerley Portrait, i’m editing atm and am just about to finish a science fiction novel called The Dog Days…keep an eye out ;)
