So I was bored at work this morning and decided to go on the internet. I came across the BBC History Magazine website, so decided to search all things Tudor (suprise, suprise HAHA)
Anyway I came some information about Henry visiting the city of Lincoln with Catherine Howard in 1541. It says that they stayed in a place called the Medieval Bishop's Palace. Apparently during the Middle Ages this was one of the most important domestic buildings in England. The building reflected the enormous influence of the bishops of Lincoln. Apparently this is one of the places that Catherine Howard allegedly committed one of her 'indescretions' with Thomas Culpepper, which led to her execution!
I am sure that I read in a novel that they visited Lincoln on the way up to York? But cant really say that I gave it much thought at the time. Anyway as Lincoln is only 36 miles away from where I live, I'm going to plan a day trip there when the weather started to get better/warmer. The Palace is now only ruins, but it will be good to see somewhere that Henry & Catherine would have visited and stayed, I googled the pictures and it looks like a nice place in the summer for a picnic !

Henry and Catherine went on progress to the north in 1541, mainly as a goodwill gesture after the Pilgrimage of Grace. And probably for Henry to show off his new Queen as well! There was even talk at one point about Catherine being crowned at York, though obviously this never happened. And you're right – it was on this trip that a lot of Catherine's indiscretions took place and I've read several sources where Lincoln has been specifically mentioned. Perhaps it was easier to conduct an affair whilst traveling?!!!! Anyway, it was only a few months after this trip that Catherine was found out and arrested.
Lucky you for living so close to these places!
