IF Henry regretted anything what would it be?
I've often wondered this, would it be the treatment of Katherine when Anne came on the scene.
Divorcing Katherine.
Treatment of Mary or Elizabeth.
Keeping Katherine and Mary apart.
Executing Anne and her brother/friends
What a cruel man Henry was, so many regrets………..

I recall reading that Henry came to reget killing Cromwell (perhaps in Hutchinson's bio on Thomas Cromwell). He later blamed his ministers of lying and killing Cromwell under false pretenses. I believe, according to the French Ambassador, in a letter to the King of France that Henry was lamenting over Cromwell's death. I apologise for forgetting the correct citation.

Sophie, My opinion of Henry is so jaded, but here it is:
Henry's regrets…
He probably regretted that Katherine didn't just dissappear.
Marrying Katherine
Having daughters
Katherine and Mary being in his life
Ever meeting Anne
I'm not sure he ever regretted anything he did to people. If Henry missed Cromwell, it was because there was nobody to fill his shoes. He missed Cromwell's efficiency.

Sharon, I really like your point about daughters. Henry definitely regretted having those!
I also thought after this post about Thomas Moor, as Thomas mounted the scaffold Henry must have regrets about Thomas going to his death.
When I think about Henry I realise just what he did to so many innocent people, a great king in my opinion BUT an evil monster all the same…….

Sophie,
What Henry did to Sir Thomas More shows his total lack of ability to regret. I was reading a book of fiction about Anne a while ago. In it, Anne was very upset about More's execution. She said something like, if Henry can order the death of a man who was his mentor, and a father figure to him, would he think twice about killing a wife who does not meet his expectations? Obviously not.
The only thing I think Henry regretted was that More refused to sign the oath. Therefore, Henry was forced to execute him. In other words, it was More's fault. I have a feeling that Henry liked to double-dare people. I think it stuck in Henry's craw that More left his service after all Henry had done for him. He had raised him high; and apparently, More didn't appreciate his king's kindness. He could have left More alone. More had resigned and moved to his country seat. Henry couldn't leave well enough alone. He had to test him. He played with people's lives as if he was playing a game of chess. As long as he won the game, all was right in his world.

If i were Henry, i'd honestly want to redo my whole life as King. No beheading especially.
But the real Henry having regrets?… (Let me think like a selfish ungrateful man for a sec) Um marrying Katherine first of all, Meeting Anne, Having daughters, He probably regretted ever meeting or marrying any of his wives except Jane Seymour, killing Cromwell because no one could do dirty work like him, He probably blamed Anne for the More beheading so he regretted that one, i can think of so more….

I’m pretty sure Henry regretted ever laying eyes on Anne of Cleves too.
Hahahaha, yeah i'm pretty sure he did. He probably wished that he could go back and beg Christina of Denmark to marry him.

I'm sure Anne did too, though she had fewer choices than Henry did.
I love to think of her signing the annulment papers with a huge grin.
It's always bunnies.

I think the only thing Henry regretted was the loss of his mobility later in life due to his leg injury. I think there may be some truth in regretting the execution of Cromwell – as mentioned before it's the man to do his dirty work but also because both Cromwell and Wolsey carried out the work of at least two men. When he jettisoned Wolsey Henry had Cromwell to take his place, there was no one of the same level of ability when Cromwell got flung to his enemies.
The only person Henry seems to have protected (aside from his son) was Cranmer, something that's always interested me – what was it about their friendship that made Cranmer different to Norris? (I can see that Henry would think More had betrayed him.) The evidence against Norris was no more than the evidence against Wyatt and yet there seems to have been more of a friendship between Norris and Henry than Wyatt and Henry.
