Hello and greetings to you all.

I must admit I wasn't very interested in History when I was at school over 30 years ago.  Though I did like learning about the Middle Ages in 2nd year of high school, it wasn't a subject I took.  (Maybe something to do with teachers making the subject boring!).  Cry

Now in my 40s, I happened to pick up one of Philippa Gregory's books, The Other Boleyn Girl, whilst browsing through my local Waterstones store!

I've read a few more since then – what I really like about Philippa's novels, is that she has really bought a 'boring' subject to life and given the historical figures character and illumination.  I even enjoy reading about the battle scenes!

I am looking forward to discussions in the forum and delving more into this fascinating period.  Smile

Best wishes

from Mel

Hi Mel and welcome.

I have ancestors that came from Derbyshire in England during the migrations of the 1800's to Canada. So, the area holds a special place for me.

I hope you enjoy the forum and have a great time. You are never too old to learn.

Cheers!

Hello Mel.

I so understand about History teachers making history boring. I had a good teacher for  1st and 2nd year at my comp. Then I got the teacher who took 'O' level for 3rd year. She made watching paint dry exciting in comparison to the Industrial revolution.

It's always bunnies.

Hello Mel, Welcome to the forum and I trust you will enjoy your time with us all.

99% of my history knowledge is self taught because I had a passion to learn about the subject myself, which was fortunate as my history teachers were to history what Marcel Marceau was to radio.

Have a good time and I look forward to reading your posts soon.Smile

Hello and welcome, I also understand about Teachers, when I was at School I loved History, but when I took the same subject at College the teacher made it very boring.

I look forward to chatting with you on the forum.

Hi Mel and welcome.  I completely understand your opinion of history in school.  We had to learn dates, and battles. That was basically it.   It was extremely boring.

One thing you can be certain of, you will never be bored here.  I will be looking forward to your posts.  Enjoy.

Hi Mel,

Welcome to The AB Files! I'm sure there are many people like you who have been brought to history through historical fiction, it succeeds at bringing the past to life in a way that some teachers just can't do! Hope you enjoy the site and the forum 🙂
