Lacey Baldwin Smith has a new book on Anne scheduled for release next month. I found this little tid-bit from the summary on Amazon.UK to be quite interesting –

‘… a young lady of no particular importane or talents – she was neither a great beauty or a captivating charmer…’

Hmm, I’d always thought of Anne as having a lot of charm, intelligence and wit – it was all part of her allure. And I loathe the books cover, the photo makes Anne look like an ugly dim-witted old bag. This book could be interesting to say the least Smile

Interesting is definitely the word. Even if you don’t like Anne and for some reason believe what she was charged with….how can you assert she had no charm or talent – she managed to keep a highly changeable King engaged for several years without sleeping with him, I’m looking forward to finding out how she explains that one away.

Woohoo I'm normal...gotta go tell the cat!

Bella, I’ve read this book and I wasn’t very impressed. I wrote a review on Amazon giving it 2 stars. It’s quite short and deals very quickly with Anne’s life up until her downfall. It then regurgitates the theories of Ives, Warnicke, Weir and Bernard as to the reasons for her fall. In a short chapter at the end he gives his own theory, but it’s not detailed at all and is light on original research. I’d be interested to see what you make of it.

I read your review Louise – gosh, 2 stars! Doesn’t sound very promising! I was hoping for a fresh perspective on Anne, otherwise I agree with you – what is the point of writing about her??? I was hoping for some new theories too, even if they’re ones I think are completely wrong and make me want to tear my hair out as I always like reading other views and opinions.

Oh well, the books on its way now; I’ll just have to read it with very low expectations. Maybe that way I’ll be pleasantly surprised Laugh

I loved his other books, which was why I was so disappointed. I can’t help feeling that a number of historians are jumping on the Tudor band wagon and throwing out books without much thought or care. I think Loades is a fine historian but he’s currently publishing a book a month! Where’s the care and the passion? I know I’m becoming a grump, but irrespective of whether you agree with Ives theories, he was so passionate about his subject matter, which is what I admire. It’s the same with Starkey, Guy and Lipscomb (and Claire). When I read their books their continued fascination with the Tudors shines out. Sometimes I think there are books that are being written for the sake of being written rather than to add anything new. Or worse, books that are written which attempt to give a new spin on the story, based on either no evidence or very questionable reinterpretation.

I’ll have to wait a wee while yet, seems it’s not released in hardback until the end of the month. Grrrr.

Laugh Sad but true. Maybe I shouldn’t do the smiley face. Cry is more appropriate. I’m still working on my theory that Anne and George Boleyn were aliens. I’ll make a fortune.

That would explain the deformed fetus Anne had, it was really an alien baby. And we all know alines like to anal probe anything and everything so that solves the George was a sexua predator conundrum. Excellent researching louise.
