While reading the newspaper this morning. OK I’ll be truthful, while reading the gossip pages of the newspaper today I stumbed across this interesting article
http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/n…..pilot.html
Adelaide Kane has won the lead role in the US TV pilot Reign.
The former Neighbours star will play Mary Queen of Scots in the CW teen drama, Deadline reports.
Reign will depict Mary as a 15-year-old who must combat dangerous foes and dark forces within the French court.
Director Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events) will helm the pilot, which is being pitched as Game of Thrones meets Marie Antoinette.
Anybody else heard anything about this, or new it was a potential TV series. I was excited about the potential of the series until I saw it was to air on CW, hope of Smallville, Charmed and numerous other teen shows. Somehow i don’t think it would be the interesting historical biopic that i would like to see. It would probably more about Mary going shopping for clothes, sleeping with men and hunting Protestants at night.

I have to agree Bill. I don’t hold out a lot of hope for this series. Some whenever an American company try to portray anything to do with British History or comedy for that fact they kill it stone dead, within seconds of the first words being uttered. Mary QOS history was a turbulant and unpredicable period of history, and I doubt the producers would get or be able to dramatise it in a way that is believable..
I agree it will probably be along the lines of Mary and her freinds going shopping and perhaps having a catfight with Catherine de Medici, over something as stupid as a bottle of wine.

Oh God! REALLY, the CW?? REALLY??
The dumbing down of America’s teens continues…That actress doesn’t even RESEMBLE Mary by the way…
Sorry, but I hate when people do this stuff. I mean, millions of teens are going to be watching this, and it won’t even be half-way historically accurate (They’ll probably make her slay vampires or sleep with them) and these teens will BELIEVE it. ‘Cuz you know if they saw it on TV it must be true….
At times I almost dream, I too have spent a life the sages' way,
And tread once more familiar paths. Perchance I perished in an arrogant self-reliance
Ages ago; and in that act, a prayer For one more chance went up so earnest, so
Instinct with better light let in by death, That life was blotted out—not so completely
But scattered wrecks enough of it remain Dim memories as now, when once more seems The goal in sight again. -- Robert Browning, Paracelsus

But then how can we really know what Mary QOS truly looked like anyway.. We have the excepted picture of her, but we can’t be really 100% certain that she did look like that. I agree with you on how the teen scene will view it though and I dread to think of the gossip that would be around the next day. I dare say it will go something like this..
“Did you see Mary QOS last night?”
“Yeah she was a right one wasn’t she spending all that money in Rodeo drive on a handbag?”
“Yeah and what about Rizzio and Darnley in bed with her? etc……..”
It will will be gawd awful and the trouble is that the teen scene as you say will believe that was, what actually happened.
In truth Mary was a bit of an idiot, not in the sence of village idiot status but from the standpoint that she simply messed up big time as Queen.
She was deaf dumb and blind to what was going on around her.

Do you think this means their gonna show Catherine de Medici as someone who is heavily involved in the black arts?? Is Mary going to be fighting Catherine??
I’m just trying to make sense of that line, that’s all. I mean, I know Catherine was a patron of Nostradamus, and I’ve read different stories about her being involving in the occult and such but I thought they were rumors or hearsay?

I think that is exactly what it means. Unfortunately, Catherine de Medici will always have the reputation of practicing the black arts. I don’t believe she did, but again, that’s what sells. She was a patron of Nostradamus, just as Elizabeth was a patron of John Dee, yet we don’t hear that Elizabeth practiced the black arts. Whenever a strong woman’s reputation needs to be destroyed, the old witchcraft stories come out of the woodwork.

Very true Sharon. Elizabeth Woodville was a prime example of that. She and her mother were both suspected of Witchcraft as was Anne.
Joanna of Navarre (Henry 1V queen) was charged and found guilty of practising witchcraft. It was alledged that she actually brought about Henry 1V death by witchcraft.
However with Catherine de Medci she was a bit of a wild card. I believe she was forever on the look out for some magic pill or potion to give her youth and beauty back..
Rasputin had a very strong influence on the Russian Royals as well. It was said he was a warlock by some.

Even though this series may end up being a little out there, it might be interesting to watch Mary’s story unfold without having to interlock it with Elizabeth. The only things I’ve ever watched with Mary, her story is always linked with Elizabeth.
Very true, I also don’t think I’ve ever seen a drama that spends more than 5minutes in France either. Many give a little dipiction of what happened from birth to returning to Scotland but most of the story takes place when she leaves France. ridiculous or not, like you say, its a first!
Woohoo I'm normal...gotta go tell the cat!

I just wtched the extended preview. I have now removed any thoughts that this showwill actually educate me on mary’s life in France what so ever. I agree with Bob it does look like some sort of bizarre hybrid of Buffy and The Tudors.
Guess I’m gonna have to rely on Fraser to educate me, hell even Weir’s book would be more informative.
But as a TV show it looks interesting. And i guess the creators thought using an historival figure would drag more people in than just a random fantasy story set in the past. I’ll give it at least one episode to impress me.
I had no idea Culpepper was in Reign though.

I don’t know what CW is but I saw a lot of people complaining on Facebook that the girl playing Mary was too attractive. Now I see why.
Then again nothing is as bad as Jonathan what-his-face playing Henry VIII. I don;t care what a good actor he is. He is not Henry. I think he is playing Dracula next I don’t know if that is worse. It probably is. Maybe we’ll get a Henry VIII-vampire show soon.

CW is the network in the US that is responsible for many of the breakout teen series of the 90s and 00s. Today it is an amalgamation of UPN and WB It’s most well known shows (in its various incantations) that it has aired are the later seasons of Buffy, the revamped 90210, America’s Next Top Model, 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girls, One Tree Hill, Smallville, Veronica Mars and Dawson’s Creek.
