I just got The Early Loves of Anne Boleyn by Josephine Wilkinson and was wondering if anyone had read it and what they thought of it. Any good? Complete rubbish?
I've read Wilkinsons book on Mary Boleyn and didn't think much of it all to be honest but as this is an Xmas present (albeit a very late one) I'm not gonna be too cut up about spending money on it if turns out to be a disappointment! Though any time I get a new book on Anne is good!
Flicking through it, I have to say the illustrations look lovely – lots of Anne including several of the NPG/Hever prototype and one very curious drawing of Anne 'as depicted in historical fiction'. Whatever that means as she looks like shes wearing clothes which are more flemish/german in style!
I was nearly put off it by the publisher's blurb which said about Anne being sent to France because of her scandalous behaviour with her father's chaplain and butler, but Josephine Wilkinson gives no credence to give this story and I found it an interesting read. I particularly enjoyed reading about James Butler, the man Anne was meant to marry, as he is often overlooked. I did a review on it a few months ago – see /resources/books/previous-books-of-the-month/book-of-the-month-november/.
Yes, I remember that illustration, I thought she looked like some kind of pirate wench!

Could be interesting?
I have wondered about James Butler and Anne as they must have met almost on a daily basis in court.
James was very powerful and quite rich, I think if Henry had not an interest would it have been James Butler that Anne would have married?
There was a dispute about the title of Ormonde and the preposed union between the Butler's and the Boleyn's was to end it. Strangely, the deal was brokered by Henry before he met Anne. The rest as they say is history…
If it was not this, then it would be something else?
