Before I start, I want to make clear that I named this topic what I did because aside from my own questions about starting a historical fiction novel I'd like other people to as well. I'd also like for you guys to post excerpts or short stories from what you've written as well! Every one here seems so nice and supportive that I'm honestly surprised I didn't find this topic already on here lol.
Anyway, I've been thinking lately about writing my own hist/fic novel! I really don't like the way most writers portray Mary and Anne Boleyn's relationship with one another and I really don't like how they all seem to victimize Mary. Surely I can't be the only one among this group who thinks Mary, although having left later, was just as active in the English court as all the other Boleyns while she was there. I just don't buy into the whole stereotype authors seem to give Mary. I haven't yet found a book to differ from that, so if you guys know of any the suggestion would be greatly appreciated! I also think her and Anne were probably a lot closer and that Anne's anger from Mary's wedlock to Stafford was probably on a more personal level then political. Like perhaps Anne genuinely wanted to put her sister in a cushioned seat of power as like a “gift” to her but was hurt by Mary's rejection of it. I'm sure politics were a great factor too but I find it hard to believe she'd be that angry at her sister as to banish her.
But anyway I know hist/fics take a lot of research! So I wanted to know what the fans really wanted to be accurate! I know names and real events as well as fashion and speech of the characters but is there anything else? Names of musical compositions or attention to details on certain items or events that are usually overlooked? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I think like most sisters they had a love/hate relationship.
Added to that was the very family orieentated power politics of the era, would have made Mary's 2nd marriage to a minor nobleman a very big blow to Anne. After all, her first was to a cousin of the king. Perhaps Mary married Stafford to avoid marriage to one of Anne's supporters such as Cromwell. Or to bring an emeny over tp the Bolleyn faction.
Certainly Mary was intelligent and educated, maybe not as smart as Anne or George. She was a major part of the court for a some time. Whether Henry talked politics with her is debatable but she would be well aware of the shifting alliences of the factions that surrounded the king.
It's always bunnies.

Thank you! You made some good points 🙂 Also, btw I love your Anne Bunny lol
I really just don't like how hist/fic novels portray their relationship and make Anne look more or less like a politically driven monster. I think that if Mary's daughter Anne truly was named after her sister then that shows Mary's love for her. I don't think Mary depised her family as much as these novels claim just because she married without permission and escaped court life.
Also what do you guys think of Jane Parker? I've read everything from her personality being foolish and stupid to calculating and jealous. Do you think the Boleyn sisters accepted her as one of their own? Or do you think it was a “keep your enemies close” type of relationship? I know George certainly didn't like her!
But wouldn't that have been interesting if Mary had married Cromwell? Surely he would have tried avidly to keep Anne on the throne then! But, if you believe like some that all things in history are bound to happen one way or another, then with Anne executed and Cromwell disgraced it would be interesting to see if Henry would have still married Anne of Cleves! It'd be really interesting if we could really peak at “What Ifs”

I write not historical fiction exactly, but alternate history. What I'm writing at the moment is a 16th century femal-dominated Monarchy, so I love to play around with the 'what-if..?'s of history! I'd reccomend writing history, I've certainly found it easier than every other genre that I've ever tried. I hope you enjoy writing it if you do decide to 🙂 Do you know of any good cures for writers' block? I'm past 80000 words about a week ago and been writing for about six months, but I'm only twelve so difficult to get anyone to take me seriously! Good luck and enjoy! 🙂
I wish to confess to you and tell you my secret, which is that I am no angel. -Queen Elizabeth I

Oh wow, twelve? I'm impressed! Have you ever published on Fictionpress.net? It'd be a good way for you to get encouragement if you're having writers block 🙂
