Who here in the U.S is being affected by this monster blizzard moving through the country? I live in central Illinois, and I'm right smack dab in the middle of it! We're under a blizzard warning until 3 pm tomorrow. We could 12-18 inches of snow, and 20-30 mph winds with gusts up to 40 mph! I will be shocked if we don't lose power.
It started snowing early afternoon yesterday. We got some sleet as well. Dad and I went to the grocery store before dinner last night to stock up. On the way home these huge snowflakes were coming down. They were the biggest snowflakes I'd ever seen! Some of them had to be 2 inches in diameter if not more!

Keep safe, Proudtobe Catholic!
The Weather Channel here in Canada is warning the public of potential heavy snowfall, winds, and wind chills. It is suppose to hit southern Ontario, then move on to my neck of the woods, Prince Edward Island.
Is this kind of weather normal for Illinois? It's pretty normal for Canada, but is never fun, nonetheless.

So far we have had about 5 inches of snow. We are in a holding pattern at the moment awaiting the worst of the storm which should be moving into our area by this evening. No winds yet. We live on the NY/PA border and we are still not sure if we will get all snow or if we will get that ice. We are all hunkered down. Most everything is closed or is going to close early.
We haven't received that much snow this year. NYC has been clobbered, but the storms have missed us. This will be the largest amount of snow we have received this year. Expecting 6 inches today 6 inches tonight and 8-12 tomorrow.
Everyone stay safe. It looks like a whopper of a storm for everyone in the lower 48.

We're not getting it in Tennessee, but my SIL works for a small college in Wisconsin and they have all ready cancelled classes for tomorrow. But they are still asking “essential” staff to work or take a vacation day if they deemed it too dangerous to travel in to work–which I think is crap. Sixty percent of their students live on campus and they cancel classes, but for the people who don't live on campus they're supposed to travel in to work or take a vacation day? That doesn't even begin to make sense to me.

Well we missed the big snow here. Last night we had some, but it was mostly a rain, sleet mix, with 20mh winds. As far as I know, no one has lost power. Things are frozen today, but it is warm enough that it will melt. Schools were closed again today. Lucky devils. Meg, I have a friend who works for our university. The kids, who live on campus, got the day off, but she had to drive in.
I think ProudtobeCatholic may have lost power in Illinois. They got hit with the blizzard. Hope she is okay.
Anyanka, batten down the hatches. Stay safe.

My SIL chose to take the vacation day and stay home with her husband (whose work told everyone to take the day off because they have to do a lot of driving) and daughter (whose daycare wound up being closed anyway). She said there are, like, 6-foot snow drifts. We got some rain last night and it's been a little windy, but otherwise it's pretty pleasant around here.
Hope all of you guys buried under the snow stay safe and warm until you can dig yourselves out!

Actually, we made it through without losing power. Although some people in Illinois did. Got about 18 inches of snow with 4 foot drifts. When I got up about 8:00 this morning it was still snowing a little. About mid morning we started to dig out. After a while we came back in, and Mom made bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, and toast. After we finished digging out we took a little drive around town. Tonight they're calling for a low of -10 with wind chills as low as -25.
I got some pics. One I took last night while the storm was in full swing. Then today I got some pics of our yard and around town.

My college was closed Tuesay. I was supposed to work today, but they told me not to come in. I wasn't going to anyway. And now my college is closed tomorrow as well!!! I got three snow days out of this! Too bad I don't have The Tudors on DVD. Tomorrow would be a great day for a Tudor marathon. Oh well, I'll probably watch my I Love Lucy DVDs, or read one of my new book.

I'm in Indy and we were right in the middle of the ice part of the storm. I've got a solid inch of ice on my porch, sidewalk, car, etc. Less than an inch of snow on top of that. The temp will drop close to 0° F tonight with high winds. *grumble* I've stayed hunkered down, but have a doctor's appointment tomorrow at noon, so I'm contemplating going out 2 hours before my appointment with my de-icer spray and 2 scrapers to get into my car and start it. Getting to the parking lot and getting into the car is going to be the difficult part! I'm very afraid I'm going to fall and I hate falling. The older I get, the less I bounce. Then I'm going to sit in the car (running) for an hour reading (my parking is around the corner, out of sight of my apartment, so I'm not leaving it running unattended, even if I lock it) and see how much melts off with the heater and rear-window de-icer running. Whatever is left has to be easier to get off, right? Then double the time for my usual 30 minute trip and see how close I get to my noon appointment. That's the plan, anyway. You may start laughing now.

Wow, cool pics ProudtobeCatholic! I've never even seen snow let alone been in a blizzard! It looks like so much fun, though I dare say it's anything but!
It's the middle of summer here in New Zealand so I can't complain – it's too hot and humid for that! We've had 3 cyclones pass through since the beginning of the year though. The big weather story at the moment is the massive cyclone in Queensland, Australia. I know people there and I'm a little bit worried for them
Hope everyone's keeping safe and out of the crazy weather
And good luck with your mission tomorrow Impish!

Thanks. If it's too bad, I'll just call and reschedule. Like if I fall a couple of times and decide it's not worth it. This is such solid ice that they've shown people on the local news using hammers and chisels to break it if they don't have one of those ice breaking thingies that looks like a hoe with the blade straightened out. Hmm, wonder if a hoe might work on the sidewalk? The side streets are a little slick and major roads are pretty good. The big thing will be getting out of my apartment complex.
ETA: Yes, that cyclone looked enormous on the satellite picture! And on top of the flooding recently… that's just nuts. I loved your pics, too, PTBC! Especially that first one with all the wonderful snow falling.

I forgot to mention, the ice covering everything is so bad that the Fire Department has had to do several animal and people rescues of people who slid down a slope and couldn't get back up again. One lady let her dogs out to piddle and they slid down the yard to the edge of the frozen retention pond. She went after them and got stuck herself. The Fire Dept. had to lay down extension ladders so they'd have something to climb back up. And even then, they were all having trouble getting back up the slope. That's insane.
