There’s a football stadium in London called, ‘The Boleyn Ground’, and I’ve done a bit of research as to the origin of the name and whether it had anything to do with Anne.
Apparently the shirts of the early West Ham team who played there at the turn of the 20th Century had a badge depicting 3 bulls. As a homage to the Boleyn family, whose coat of arms featured 3 bulls, the stadium became known as the Boleyn Ground.
The football song, ‘Three Lions on my Shirt’, comes from the original chant of, ‘Three Bulls on my Shirt’, which was sung by the supporters of the West Ham team at the Boleyn Ground in 1912.
It’s also believed that the pigskin balls, which were originally used in football, had the image of a woman’s face on them at the Boleyn Ground, representing the head of the tragic Anne Boleyn. It’s thought that this is where the word ‘header’ comes from when a goal is scored off a players head.
Interesting!
