I just read on Conor Byrne’s history blog, that there were rumors that Thomas did indeed consider marrying Jane himself!
Quote: “Unbeknownst to Katherine, he had actually, before marrying Katherine, petitioned both Mary Tudor and Elizabeth for marriage, and later even considered marrying the nine-year old Jane Grey.”
I wondered where I got the idea that Thomas could have wanted to marry Jane! I must have read it somewhere else too.

Thanks LadyPrincess. I don’t believe I have heard that Thomas wanted to marry Jane. I wonder where that is from. Have you remembered where else you read that? I only have one book about Jane, by Eric Ives, but I confess I have only glanced through it. I’ll have to dig into it. She was very young at the time. 10 or 11. I know Thomas either sent her home or was going to send her after Katherine’s death, but then asked her parents if he could still have her as his ward.
On further delving…Jane was sent home and later Thomas asked for her return. He convinced Dorset to send her back by telling him of his plan “to get the king at liberty”, out of Somerset’s control and into his.
Ives makes mention of a rumor that was tossed about which was that Thomas wanted to marry Jane. (and this was after Katherine died.) Thomas treated this rumor as a joke. Thomas’ plan was always to marry Jane to Edward. (the king) With Jane under his control, no one else could use her including his brother, Edward, who may have wanted to marry her to his own son, Edward. (Way too many Edwards here) Jane was an investment to Thomas.
