I love costume dramas and have to say that 'The Tudors' despite not being historically accurate with many of the costumes, is my favourite in terms of creativity. I also have always noticed how the costume designer in the Tudors made some quite symbolic costumes, although they may have not been exactly appropriate for the time period, they conveyed the characters personalities very well.
I thought it would be interesting to discuss what everyone thought were the best costumes across any of the series?
Here are just a few of my favourites-
Anne's dress episode 4/5 season 1- The dress that Anne wears when she talks to Thomas Wyatt at Hever -I love the simplicity of it. Just how I imagine Anne to have dressed when she was at Hever, just returned from France!
Golden world dress season 2- You know the one where Anne says 'we are on the edge of a golden world'
All of the ghost Queen dresses- Season 4
Mark Smeaton Season 2-I loved his costume-especially liked the earring! he really looked like a court musician
Henry's long black cloak Season 2-When he bows to Mary after visiting the baby Princess Elizabeth-this is so different to what you'd expect in a period drama, but really worked and made him look quite intimidating whilst still very well dressed!
Henry's red costume Season 4- On the promotional images-very regal and imposing

Great Thread Claire-Louise!!! Ok there are so many I am going to have to pick 1 costume for each wife & Herny, so my favourite costumes are:-
1. Katherine of Aragons Black Dress she wears in the opening credits. Black suit Katherine very well and compliements her dark hair.
2. Anne Boleyns Execution Dress. I just love the colour & style of this dress, stunning!
3. Jane Seymours Pink Dress from season 3. I think this is the one where Herny gives Jane the Puppy/Dog as a gift. I love the colour of the dress and it really suites Janes complection & blonde hair
4. Anne of Cleves Wedding Dress. I love the detal of the bodice, neckline and the beautiful headress she wears.
5. Katherine Howards Red Christmas Dress she wears in season 4 to the Christmas celebrations. I love the puffy princess style sleeves at the shoulder and the wreath she wears on her head
6. Catherine Parrs Green/Cream Dress she wear when she is sat with Henry in the gardens & they come to arrest Catherine. I love the hat she is wearing and the fur muff to keep her hands warm
7. Henry VIII's Black/Grey doublet & hose costume when he is walking with Anne in the snow and tells her he is taking her to France so he can introduce her as the future Queen of England to King Francis. I absolutly love the big fur coat he is wearing, it looks so warm
8. Anne Boleyns stunning fur coat/cape & matching hat she wears when she is walking with Henry in the snow as above

My Favs are:
KOA: black dress from season one during. I believe it is the same one Clarebear mentioned above. Black is def. KOA's colour.
AB: Gold dress from Henry's dream of Anne during season 1, Yellow dress from season 2 (Golden world dress), and execution gown was understated, yet beautiful. I also loved the dress Anne wear when she seduced Henry with the “volta” dance in season 2. I love these dress for a variety of reasons, but they all exuded Anne's sensuality and off-set her dramatic dark locks.
JS: All season 3: her wedding dress and the red dress worn during the episode featuring Christmastime. I liked these as they gave Jane some colour and flair. Her wedding dress was sumptuous and the detail to die for. The red dress looked amazing against her fair complextion, and her blonde hair was beautiful.
AC: her wedding dress for the same reasons as Clarebear. I also loved the dress AC wears when Cromwell comes to visit (ep. 7 or 8). I love the gold colour, and how the brown complements the characters colouration.
KH: The red dress from season 4, episode 1 when KH talks about “French” fashions.
KP: the tourqouise/gold gown used in the promos, the purple down when KP received gifts from Henry, and the cloak when she begs pleads with Henry.
But, while I love all these gowns, Princess Mary's are my favourites. All of them! Sarah Bolger is a stunning young woman. The gowns complemented her youth and beauty. But added an element of her religious devotion, with a courtier's love of fine clothes.

I forgot about the gold dress in the dream sequence! one of my absolute favourites! If I wasn't about to go to uni and on a student budget, I would probably try and buy a custom design from the AB files-but I would have it in blue 🙂
I also love the dress that Anne wears in season 2 when she asks Henry where he is going, and then it goes into that weird dream sequence with brereton! It's purple, with a high collar.
Oh and I do love Katherine Howard's dress when she is dancing in her rooms with her ladies and a dance instructor!

I, too, would love to buy a custom made AB dress. Perhaps someday when I am no longer a poor student. So, I know the feeling of living on a budget!
Despite the historical innaccuracy of the gowns, I found Joan Bergin, costume designer for “TheTudors” did a fantastic job of using the clothing to reflect the Queens' personalities. I appreciated the time Ms. Bergin obviously spent on creating the beautiful clothes. They were a feast for the eyes. There was a modern essence to her designs that I cannot quite describe. Know what I mean?

Definitely! I think it made it easier for the audience to relate to the characters and also I think it got people interested in history who previously had presumed it was boring. My Mum has always enjoyed History but only a couple of years ago she would have probably said the Tudor period was her least favourite ( unbelievable I know!!) I think it was because she never enjoyed it at school. She also expected dramas about the era to be stuffy and boring! Then she watched 'The Tudors' and loved it! now she is fascinated by the period and is borrowing loads of my factual books and she has become a fan of films that she previously dismissed. I think that because 'The Tudors' looked so fresh and different to what has been portrayed before, it catches peoples attention-and if a few innacurate costumes bring people back to the history books-then it's not a bad thing at all

The majority of the outfits used in the show are wildly inaccurate, but they're still so beautiful! =) Some of the bona fide Tudor garb might have been really unflattering to the actors anyway – it's interesting to speculate whether or not lots of women in gable hoods would have lost the show viewers! 😉 (Think Jane Seymour's Holbein portrait!) I think that my favourite costumes in the show are definitely Anne's =) They gave her some absolutely stunning costumes, and I loved the way many of them were quite symbolic, too. So, in no particular order, my three favourites…
The golden world dress. It's just so vibrant and it really captures Anne's hopeful feeling and energy – she's with child again, and has everything to look forward to, or so she thinks (</3). The accompanying crinkly hat/headdress is a *little* bit strange, but oddly beautiful too!
The red velvet dress she wears when crowned marquess. It makes her look simply majestic. <3
The execution dress. So lovely, made of gorgeous material, and really suitable for the poignancy of the scene. An on-looker of Anne's execution described her as being “never so lovely” and the outfit the Tudors used really captured that. (Although in my opinion, throughout the entirety of the series she was in, Natalie Dormer always looked lovely in every outfit!) I love the embroidery on the end of the corest, it looks kind of beaded. And the material really IS to die for, it almost shines. <3

Most of my favorite outfits are Anne outfits, but I think that's because that's what jumped out at me when I was watching the series the first time around. So, in no particular order.
I, too, loved the gown Anne was wearing in her conversation with Thomas Wyatt. The off-the-shoulder look, while I'm sure hugely inaccurate, was simple and stunning.
My next favorite was her gold dress during the dream sequence. If you look closely, you can see that it appears to be covered in French knots and I have to appreciate that kind of workmanship. Such detail!
Anne's execution dress.
I also really liked the dresses that were fashioned for Anne during her pregnancies. I don't know why–perhaps because of their simplicity.
I did, however, notice the distinct lack of gable hoods–even KoA never wore one which somewhat annoyed me. And I most certainly didn't like the dresses of Anne's ladies-in-waiting. I realize that was their job, but did they all really dress in uniform like that??

I think they had a code since Jane was particular down top the number of pearls on her ladies girdles. Her instructions to Lady Lisle regarding the clothes for her daughters included no French hoods. ( JAne Seymour by Elizabeth Norton pages 130-134).
I also read that Elizabeth's ladies were only allowed to dress in white or black to accentuate Elizabeth's brillant clothing.
Following the death of Prince Albert, Victoria's ladies wore court mourning for a year and then half mouring for the rest of thier time in waiting.
It's always bunnies.

The best dress from Anne is the dream sequence one, the Gold one with the tiny pearls or sequins or whatever. I also loved the light Blue one with the flower on it, the one She wears to eat with Wolsey and the King, it's also in some of the promotional photos.
I loved Katherine Of Aragon's dress where she's running around with princess Mary then is stopped by Wolsey. The purple cloak is beautiful as well. (it's in season one). And the Blck one in season 2 where she goes to trial for the divorce, i don't like the huge jewels but the dress is pretty.
I liked Jane Seymour's wedding dress and her pink dress with gold detail in the promo photo's.
I didn't really like Katheryn Howards dresses all that much but i liked her outfit in the scene where she's dancing and Tamzin's voice is reading the letter to Thomas Culpepper before the execution biz and all that. it's white and may be a under outfit for gowns or something. I don't know.
Katherine Parr's wardobe was too colorful for my liking.
