Hi, I hoping someone might help me. I am doing some research for a novel, its set early in tudor times. I was wondering how often courtiers especially grooms of the kings chambers would allowed to return home to their own estates normally. Also if the king had some suspicions of the men’s activities would it be unreasonable for him(the king) to restrict there movements and put conditions on where they can go. For instance not allowing father and son to return home at the same time, sort of keeping one as a surety to the other?
I realise its a novel and therefore fiction, but i do like to have certain amount of historical credibility to the events.

I’m guessing the courtiers would leave when the court was quiet. So when the monarch was on progress..so June/July to September. Possibly also during Lent when court affairs were low key.
Certainly there were cases where the son was a member of Henry’s court while the father was away on the king”s business..James Butler, son of the earl of Ormonde springs to mind.
It's always bunnies.
