Okay, so Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot isn’t strictly Tudor related but it certainly had its beginnings in the later years of Elizabeths’ reign due to increased anti-Catholic feeling.
Does anyone here celebrate Guy Fawkes night? If so, how? What do you think of the plot to blow up parliament and the royal family? And would you call him and the rest of the plotters terrorists or do you sympathise with their aims? Is it a redundant holiday or has it been given new meaning with the Occupy movements etc?
Here in New Zealand all context has been largely stripped from the celebration and we see it largely as just an excuse to let off fireworks. It’s more of a family thing, something to amuse the kids. If you asked most people why they celebrate and what it means they’d be hard pressed to give an accurate answer which I think is pretty awful. I don’t really do much for Guy Fawkes night myself (haven’t really since I was about 10!) but it strikes me as rather a strange thing to be celebrating.
What does everyone else think?

I love fireworks, but I don't celebrate it as Guy Fawkes night really. I find the burning of his effigy on bonfires a little disturbing lol. I am glad it failed however, as I feel restoring the Catholic Faith to the monarchy would have caused renewed papal authority.
"It is however but Justice, & my Duty to declre that this amiable Woman was entirely innocent of the Crimes with which she was accused, of which her Beauty, her Elegance, & her Sprightliness were sufficient proofs..." Jane Austen.
