If is such a little word but it has a big effect…
So anyway, if Henry when drawing up the succession had obviously named Edward to follow him but did not include Mary in her place, because of her adherence to Spanish way and her religious leanings, naming Elizabeth to follow Edward if he had no issue. (Okay it is an IF) who wouldn’t have died?
Obviously a lot of heretics who were burned etc but I was thinking of ‘names’. The most obvious one would be Jane Grey I suppose as she would never have been so manipulated and let down by her family.
Though thinking on it a bit more I suppose there would have been a bit of a battle for the throne on Edward’s death. Mary doing what she did in fact do.
Would Mary have had as much support if Henry had not named her do you think?
Would the Spanish Armada have turned up a lot sooner than it did?
Would Elizabeth coming to the throne much younger have been pushed into a marriage after all by her advisors?
What would Elizabeth’s feelings be toward her sister if she had leapfrogged over her?
So many questions…………

That’s a great question Maggyann. Cranmer I think. I haven’t read enough about Mary yet for anyone else to spring to mind.
Would Mary have had enough support? I think she would have. I think they (the common folk at least) would have still considered her the “true heir” even if Henry had made her illegitimate and removed her, after all, Elizabeth technically wouldn’t have had any better a claim as Henry had both their Mother’s marriages annulled.
I don’t think even at that age Elizabeth would have allowed herself to be forced into marriage if she were Queen.
On another note I recently read something interesting about Mary, that the Pope advised her against marriage. I think she would have lived a lot longer. Maybe that example would have reinforced Elizabeth’s decision to never want to marry.
the last question has me stuck. Their relationship deteriorated much more after Mary had power over Elizabeth. Elizabeth wouldn’t have suffered imprisonment if Mary was Queen. Do you think the roles would have been reversed? Mary plotting and being imprisoned by her sister? of course Elizabeth didn’t treat her cousin any better than Mary treated her in that situation.
