On this day in Tudor history, 17th September 1558, in the reign of Queen Mary I, Walter Devereux, 1st Viscount Hereford, died at his family seat, Chartley in Staffordshire.
Devereux was the great-grandfather of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, who was a favourite of Elizabeth I.
Devereux had a long and distinguished court career. He served Henry VIII, Princess Mary in Ludlow, and Edward VI. He also married at around the age of 11 and was imprisoned at one point.
